Fairtrade in Schools
The
Fairtrade mark guarantees goods have been fairly
traded. The mark is awarded only to products that meet
strict criteria, including:
- Decent wages, adequate housing and health &
safety standards for workers in plantations and
factories.
- The right to join trade unions and to
participate in democratic organisations (e.g.
producers’ co-operatives)
- A fair minimum price
- A social ‘premium’ on top of the fair price,
to improve schools and provide clean water,
healthcare and roads, so that people can plan
their future.
- A long-term trading commitment.
- Good environmental standards and sustainable
production practices.
- No child or forced labour.
The Fairtrade Foundation with its partners,
checks that products continue to meet these criteria
after they are approved.
How to become a Fairtrade School

To become a Fairtrade School you need to be able to
say:
- Our school has set up a Fairtrade School
Steering Group (or committee). At least half of us
are pupils or students and we meet together at
least once a term.
- Our school has written and adopted a
whole-school Fairtrade Policy. We have the support
of the board of Governors and our Policy is signed
by the Headteacher.
- Our school is committed to selling, promoting
and using Fairtrade products as much as possible.
If we have problems, we can at least show that we
have tried and will continue trying.
- Our whole school learns about Fairtrade In at
least three subjects in each of two year groups.
- Our school promotes and takes action for
Fairtrade at least once a term in the school and
once a year in the wider community. This way it
becomes a regular part of what we do, and allows
everyone to take part in helping to bring about a
fairer world.
