Sustainability Strategy
Trafford's first sustainability strategy is the
result of over two years work following extensive
consultations with local people, and commits the
Council to tackling climate change with a range of
environmental issues including fuel poverty with a
three year plan.
Over half million tonnes of carbon dioxide is produced
from homes in Trafford every year - that's about a
quarter of the total emissions in the borough. The
strategy identifies how the council can reduce its own
energy use, working with schools, leisure centres and
housing associations to minimise their impact on
climate change also feature in the plan, plus raising
awareness of energy efficiency in Trafford's 90,000
existing homes.
The aim is to cut carbon emissions by 25 per cent by
2020 through a number of measures across the borough,
including making the most of wood resources,
supporting businesses to prepare themselves for a low
carbon environment, and ensuring that future planning
permission is only given to developments that reduce
their greenhouse gas emissions.
Nottingham Declaration and the Northwest Climate
Change Charter
Recognising the importance of Trafford's commitment
to address the region's future economic, social and
environment concerns, the Council has signed up to the
Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change and the
Northwest Climate Change Charter.
By signing both of these charters the Council
becomes part of a growing action group of regional and
national environmental champions committed to tackling
climate change, and implementing working practices to
reduce its carbon footprint. |
