Climate Change... Global Warming
Climate change is happening now, and will hit
Trafford every bit as hard as the rest of the world!
Together, we have the power to do something about it
if we all make small differences to the way we live.
Together we have the power to do something about it.
The Trafford is my Planet website gives the
opportunity to show how the people of Trafford are
doing their bit to make a difference......
We may think that global problems do not affect us
individually, but they do. There are links between
health and the environment, as can be seen from the
rising number of asthma cases and transport related
pollution.
Our society currently consumes more natural resources
and produces more pollution and waste than can be
supported by nature indefinitely, for example, our
dependence on fossil fuels will inevitably have to
change. As reserves run out or become uneconomic to
extract, renewable energies should become a main
consideration. The main problem with fossil fuels is
not that they are running out, but that they release
carbon dioxide when burnt - the main cause of global
warming and climate change. Other forms of pollution -
sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide - are also emitted
by fossil fuels.
Think about this:
-
We use 8% of our energy for hot water; We
use 6% for lighting and other electrical
appliances;
-
We use 26% of our energy for heating;
-
And we use 35% of our energy for
transport.
And those are four, simple areas where
each of us can start taking action on, today!
Each household in the UK creates around six
tonnes of carbon dioxide a year -
-
That’s six times the weight of the rubbish a household throws away in a year.
-
It's enough to fill six hot air balloons (10
meters in diameter).
-
It's also more carbon dioxide emissions than the
average car.
